The Companion

"The Companion" (2004 Demo)

1. The Companion

1. The Companion

Part 1 - The Man Of Silence

Sun is slowly rising
Yellow leaves are falling
Autumn wind runs gently through my hair

Awake to smell the freshness
Of a new day, dawning
Birds are chirping as to greet the new day

Morning mist dispersing
A new day awaits me
As my future; still unknown to me

Pull my cloak around me
Starting this day's journey
I'm a wanderer without a plan

Left my past behind me
What awaits before me?
Path uncertain, fate will lead the way

Walking through the forest
Narrow path before me
Leading to my future; still unknown

The feeling of calm inside me
Joyful birds are singing
Leaves are rattled by the morning breeze

Feels as though I'm being
Watched from the shadows
Look around but nothing's there to be seen

I resume my unknown path
I let the feeling slip away
I spot some movement in the trees
Something dark is watching me

A sound is heard behind me
I turn around, but nothing's there
I turn my eyes into the woods
But there is nothing to be seen

I close my just eyes for a while
Listening to the singing birds
Resume my walk along the path
And let the feeling slip away

But a feeling washes over me
The feeling of being watched
I look around, and then I see
A man is staring back at me

Surrounded by a dark cloak
Pulled far over his head
He watches from the shadows
His face can not be seen

Then suddenly he's gone
Vanished just like that
I turn to walk away
But see the man before me

We stand there for a while
Watching
Waiting
Breathing

Looking at each other
While not saying a word
The Man Of Silence speaks to me
Like echoes in my head

Do not run from your past
To live again you must first die

Then silence
Once again
In a heartbeat he closes in

Movement without moving
Face still hidden in the dark
The Man Of Silence grants me a gift

A golden key of mystery
He reaches for my hand
Again I hear the voices inside

The answers will come
The key will show you the way
The answers will come

I hesitate a moment
And then accept the gift
My head is filled with pictures
Emotions from afar

Suffering and sorrow
A lighthouse and an ocean
A woman holding on
To what little might remain

Pain and death awaiting
Will this dream become my fate?
The Man Of Silence watches me
From a soundless world of gray

Pain and death awaiting
Will this dream become my fate?
The Man Of Silence watches me
From a soundless world of gray

I open my eyes
I've awaken from the dream
The Man Of Silence vanished
Again without a trace

Start my journey once again
I follow the unknown path
The voice still echoes in my head
The answers will come

Part 2 - The Companion

My journey proceeds
Throughout the day
Leading me
To a stream

Empty eyes are staring back at me
From a face carved of stone

Familiar eyes
Ragged hair
"Come", he says
"I mean you no harm"

I look around for a bridge to lead me
To the other side

"Will you help me?", he asks
"Help me find my past"
"Help me..."
"...find my past..."

I reply:
"I'll help you search"
No response
Cold as ice

Still not sure why I decided to help
But I follow him onto the forest path

But somehow he reminds me...
Reminds me of myself
In silence
We start our journey

Days have passed
How many days have I wandered?

Night follows day
Follows night again
Endless circle of time

We walk in silence
My days are spent in solitude

Hardly speaks
- my Companion
Just like me, he keeps to himself

We have been spared from company
We wander on alone
But one night by the fire
A woman did appear
Riding by as if we didn't exist

The wind is rising day by day
The sky is turning grey
I feel a storm approaching us
Heading for our way
We need to find some shelter for the night

The woods are slowly opening up
A village is ahead
The wind picks up as we decide
To seek our shelter there
The townsfolk are preparing for the storm

As we draw nearer to the town
I see what's going on
Sealing up the city gate
Protection from the storm
My shout for them to wait goes unheard

Arrive to find the gates are closed
We have to turn back
My Companion leads me deeper back
Into the woods

Leads me to an abandoned house
Fallen long ago
The sky is getting darker
We will rest here for the night

I enter the house and fall asleep
And step into a dream

Part 3 - The Dream (the meeting on the mountain)

I open my eyes
I've stepped into a dream

Surrounded by a strange light
Coming from nowhere and everywhere

Can't tell night from day
I've stepped into a world of grey

Not a sound can be heard
No leaves being stirred by the wind
No wind to stir them

I turn my head and look around
But all I see is trees
No sign to give away my whereabouts

Suddenly I'm floating
Rising up over the trees
I let my eyes gaze over the forest

I know this is a dream
But still it feels so real
As real as life itself

Far away I see a mountain
But the distance seems to change
Moving closer as I gaze upon it

I open my eyes
And suddenly I'm at the top of the mountain
Looking down

Next to a church there's a man
The Man Of Silence
And I feel safe

"Where am I?", I ask
No reply
He raises his arm
And points to the church

The door is locked
I turn my head around
The man is gone

His words echo in my head
The key will show you the way
I pick up the key
But now the door isn't locked

I open the door
And darkness greets me
I step into the church
And I disappear

Part 4 - Alone Again

I've awaken from The Dream
The wind has risen, the storm is waiting
To be unleashed

My Companion has left me
The feeling of loneliness
Creeps over me

I pick up my bundle and start my way
To the mountain top
What awaits me is left to be discovered

For how long have I wandered?
How long since I last slept?
My Companion abandoned me

A never before experienced loneliness
Is gnawing and eating me from inside

Something is eating me from the inside
Leaving a shell of the man I was
Who am I? Have I changed?
I can't recall who I used to be

It all seem lost in the fog clouding my mind
I remember The Dream, and what it left me
A longing

Growing stronger every day
I long for answers and safety
I suddenly realize I've arrived at the foot of the mountain

I look up towards the top
Can't make out the dark shape above
As it fades away into the sky, growing ever darker

Part 5 - Getting Closer

I open my eyes
How long had they been closed?
The darkness is gone
But where am I now?

Valleys and treetops below
Surrounding me everywhere
How did I reach this place?
I can't recall anything

The church isn't far away
Remember it from The Dream
I open the door and I see
My Companion has come back to me

He motions me to turn around
I scan the horizon and valleys below
Have I seen this place before?
Or was it just a dream?

Far away
The lighthouse from my vision
Could it be the same?
We start our journey once again

We walk for many days without a word being said
My Companion shows the path and I know which way to go
Even before he makes his move

The passing landscape seems deserted since the mountain top
Scattered houses is all I see, abandoned for some time
Walking all alone in the rain

Trees and plants are withering, life seems taken away
Lack of colour, lack of warmth, lack of life itself
And the rain continues to fall

The wind is rising day by day, the storm is almost here
And as our journey takes us closer to our unknown goal
I start to recognize everything

I have been here before
In the past
Who am I? Where have I been?
I can't recall who I used to be

My Companion disappears
From time to time
But even though he's not here
Somehow I know...

Part 6 - The Answers Will Come

After days of walking the forest finally clears
Wind is rising day by day
And no longer so distant; the lighthouse has appeared
Watchtower over the ocean

Smashing waves on mountain sides and the raging wind
Is the only sound I hear
I am getting closer as I embark on my final road
Which will lead me to my answers.
Alone.

My Companion left me
And he's not coming back
Perhaps he was never really there?

As I approach the lighthouse
Awareness suddenly hits me
Old memories are flashing through my head

Do I know this place?
Have I been here before?
Pick up the pace, I run against the roaring wind

I hear a voice inside my head
It's the Man Of Silence
His familiar voice tells me "the answers will come..."

I slam into the lighthouse door
No time to slow down
I try the door but it won't budge
Again the voice inside my head

The key will show you the way
I pick up the key that was given to me
I try again to open the door
But the door remains locked

In despair I search for a way
To get inside the lighthouse
I remember this place
This is where I used to live

The wind is raging over my head
I remember there's a back door
I head towards it at a dead run
But the door is just as locked

I turn my head from side to side
I search for answers everywhere
And suddenly I find myself
Staring at an old house

This is where I used to live
I remember having a wife
I remember a little girl
What happened to my family?

I run towards my old home
The sound of roaring wind is lost
In the smashing of the waves
Oh, where have I been?

I've been searching for so long
I've been searching all alone
No Companion with me
It was always only me

I try the key
The door slams open
Suddenly it's all clear
I remember

This is where I lived with my family
There was a storm, much like this one

A knock on the door, a man comes in
Raising his blade against us all
I remember the cut through my throat
Watch him go after my family

I remember screaming...
I remember crying...
I remember searching...
I remember dying...

The storm is over
It might as well never have been
And by the door, a dark shape is looking at me
The Man Of Silence

For the last time I hear his voice
Echo in my head
To live again you must first die...
And all colours seem to fade away

He starts to pull down the hood of his cloak
Revealing his face for the first time
I manage to say some last few words
Before the world turns black

I remember...
